On Saturday, I spent three hours with a mom and her brand new baby helping her learn the art of breastfeeding. Both mom and dad came into the birth center frustrated and worn out with a baby that wasn’t getting fed because of a bad latch, and by the end of it they left with a well fed baby, information on proper latch and big smiles on their faces. Getting a great latch from the start helps improve your feelings about being a capable mother and makes for one happy baby. It’s so important to take the time, before the birth of your baby, to learn about breastfeeding and understanding what makes a good latch. Continue reading
My Fears Got Mean Fingers
20 OctI’m feeling it. That oh my God desperation. What will I do and how will I manage it? This pregnancy has brought out some old memories from the back of my mind – they’ve stirred up my fears and given them fingers and these mean fingers have pulled open a closet door that leads to a box full of lonely emotions that I packed away about 12 months ago. While Peter and I intended on trying for a second baby this year, we also thought it would take us a lot longer to get pregnant. I definitely didn’t think it would happen on the first try. But what do I know? Sometimes you just get lucky. I should have known, I got pregnant way too easily with Zoe, but I thought it was a fluke, especially since we weren’t officially trying. Long story, but you can read bits of it here, here and here. Continue reading

I’m a doula, I assist with childbirth education classes and I’m also a birth assistant (BA). I’ve gotten a lot of questions about what the difference is between a doula and a birth assistant. So here’s an explanation of what I do as a BA, next time I’ll tell you what I do as a doula. Continue reading
12 Weeks Pregnant
29 SepI’m pregnant! I haven’t blogged in about two months because, well, I just couldn’t. I didn’t feel well enough to write, and also, how could I blog and NOT tell you I was pregnant? I wanted to wait till I hit the 12 week mark – and I practically have, I’ll be 12 weeks on Friday. For now, this post is short, but I plan on writing a blog with lots of photos soon sharing the really funny story of how and where I found out I was pregnant. In short, it involved my birthday, two STRONG margaritas and a trip to the Walgreens bathroom at midnight. Classy, I know.
Editor’s note: I wrote about the story, finally, click here read it.
